Results of the National Prison Census - 30 June 1993
Compiled on behalf of the Correctional Administrators
This report, containing the results of the twelfth annual National Prison Census, is the last to be compiled and published by the Australian Institute of Criminology. As at 1 July 1995, the work of compiling the Census data was handed over to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. In the handing over process, the Institute delivered to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the diskettes containing the data for the thirteenth Census, 30 June 1994, received from four jurisdictions. The Bureau will also publish the monthly Australian Prison Trends from 1 July 1994.

Results of the National Prison Census - 30 June 1992
Compiled on behalf of the Correctional Administrators
This is the report of the eleventh annual National Prison Census. It was conducted on the night of 30 June 1992 and included all persons, convicted and unconvicted, held in adult correctional institutions in all Australian jurisdictions. The tables contained in this report are largely compatible with those in the previous Census reports as, wherever possible, the same definitions, counting rules and tabulations have been used. The data collection form used in 1992 differed from that used since 1987 only in the inclusion of questions on persons returned to prison after recapture following escape/breach of parole and the dropping of the question relating to alcohol/drug involvement in offences for which people are in prison. An attempt was made to separately identify Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders; however, few jurisdictions were able to provide data.

Results of the National Prison Census - 30 June 1991
Compiled on behalf of the Correctional Administrators
This is the report of the tenth annual National Prison Census. It was conducted on the night of 30 June 1991 and included all persons, convicted and unconvicted, held in adult correctional institutions in all Australian jurisdictions. The tables contained in this report are largely compatible with those in the previous Census reports as, wherever possible, the same definitions, counting rules and tabulations have been used. The data collection form used in 1991 is identical to that used since 1987. Owing to some technological improvements at the Institute, I have this year been able to include means and medians in some tables. I have also included a table of ratios of prisoners by country of birth, which has always been a topic of debate.

Results of the National Prison Census - 30 June 1983
This is the report of the second annual National Prison Census which was held on the night of 30 June 1983. Tables contained herein are largely compatible with those of the report of the 1982 census since, wherever possible, the same definitions and tabulation methods have been used. Where last year only a static statistical picture was able to be presented, this year the report can present comparisons over time, albeit only a two year period. It is however an important step, particularly at a time when most prison systems are at the limits of their capacity and imprisonment trends are the subject of numerous inquiries and consultant reports.

Results of the National Prison Census - 30 June 1982
The proposal for a national prison census first emerged at a correctional administrators meeting in Melbourne in September 1980 as an offshoot from a review of correctional statistics. Preliminary technical discussions were held in December 1980 and a formal proposal went to the Ministers Conference held in New Zealand in April/May 1981. There was agreement among administrators and Ministers that the results of such a census would be extremely valuable for management and planning purposes, for example in projecting future needs for facilities of various types, or for comparing the effects of differing parole policies. The results might also throw some light on sentencing practices in different jurisdictions, and would be invaluable to practitioners and researchers in a wide variety of areas including the judiciary, criminologists, and behavioural scientists.
