Abstract
The authors attempt to explain the low percentage of women in Australian police services. Issues explored include the recruitment process, deployment of women; the representation of women in senior ranks and management; police culture; attitudes to women police; and working conditions. Greater flexibility with regard to working conditions, duties and traditional perceptions of women's capabilities may lead to increased numbers of women police in the future.
