Abstract

The debate surrounding private prisons has highlighted several misconceptions about privatisation, including its possible effects on the public prison system. Harding clarifies these issues. He defines privatisation, describes the pressures leading to privatisation and outlines its hazards and benefits. He provides a case study of deeply flawed privatisation (the Tallong Wilderness Progam) and explores how Borallon and Junee are seeking to avoid these hazards.
