Deaths in custody in Australia: 2001 National Deaths in Custody Program (NDICP) annual report

Abstract

This report presents detailed tabulated information on deaths in custody in Australia for the year 2001 and also provides jurisdictional breakdowns for comparative purposes. During 2001 there was a total of 87 deaths in police and prison custody, including 19 Indigenous deaths. There were no deaths in juvenile detention in Australia during 2001. When compared to 2000, the overall number of deaths in custody has remained relatively stable; however during 2001 the number of prison deaths decreased from 64 to 56, whereas the number of police custodial deaths increased from 25 to 31. The report also contains information on the causes of deaths in custody.
