Abstract
This public symposium addresses the subject of 'criminal justice policy - what should it be'. It highlights seven themes, these include the objective of criminal justice policy is to reduce costs and evaluate total expenditure; heavy penalties alone are not a response to crime; statistics need to be available immediately; collaboration between Western Australian departments and the Australian Institute of Criminology to clarify real meaning of lower crime figures; better training of police, judges, magistrates and correctional workers; and tape recording of voluntary statements.
