Abstract
During August 1992 the Second National Police Custody Survey was conducted, in order to obtain information on the extent and nature of police custody in Australia. Preliminary findings indicate that while fewer people are being held in police lockups than in the first survey in 1988, there is still an overrepresentation of Aboriginal people. The findings present statistical and descriptive information on State and Aboriginality; demographic characteristics; offences; length of stay in custody; and reasons for release.
