This report analyses the results of a survey of 1,188 persons whose period of remand in custody terminated during October and November 1984. Overall, the results show that the use of remand in custody orders differs in several ways from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. The jurisdictions of New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory use remand in custody orders more frequently than the other jurisdictions. The processes of granting a release on bail to persons remanded in custody differ between the larger jurisdictions and the small jurisdictions. Remandees in Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory are more likely to receive a non-custodial sentence upon conviction than those in New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory.
