Physical planning and crime in Canberra

Abstract

In April 1980 the National Capital Development Commission conducted a twenty per cent sample survey of standard houses in the 'inner' northern suburbs of Canberra primarily as an aid to their planning of community facilities in these suburbs. In addition to seeking demographic data the mail questionnaire asked residents their opinion of the level of crime in their suburb, and their reactions to and experiences of crime in the preceding twelve months. Respondents were also asked to choose from a list of physical planning factors which issues (if any) they thought were particularly related to crime in their suburb. Almost one-third of the 2000 mailed questionnaires were returned.
