Chris Dawson APM - Director (Chief Executive)
Chris Dawson APM was appointed the Interim Director of the AIC on 13 July 2015. He is also the
Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Crime Commission, a role he commenced in April 2014.
Prior to his appointment as the ACC CEO he held the rank of Deputy Commissioner of the Western Australian Police. During his extensive law enforcement career he served in country and metropolitan positions, and as Deputy Commissioner, had total responsibility for specialist portfolios of serious and organised crime, counter terrorism and state protection.
In 2011 Chris was State Commander for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) where he was responsible for the security of all attending Heads of State from 53 Commonwealth countries and their respective other senior ministers and delegates.
After his appointment as Deputy Commissioner in July 2004, Mr Dawson led the agency reforms following the Royal Commission into Western Australia Police. From May 2008 he had overall management of all operational policing within metropolitan and regional areas of Western Australia, the world’s largest single police jurisdiction (more than 2.5 million square kilometres).
Mr Dawson holds a Graduate Certificate in Police Management, a Graduate Diploma from the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a Diploma in Policing. Mr Dawson was awarded the Australian Police Medal for distinguished service in the 2002 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Dr Rick Brown is Deputy Director (Research) with the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC). He has worked extensively on issues associated with crime reduction, community safety and policing both in the UK and Republic of Ireland. For ten years prior to joining AIC, he ran a research and training consultancy (Evidence Led Solutions Limited) that specialised in community safety issues and worked with a wide range of organisations, including government departments, local authorities, police services and fire and rescue services, as well as working closely with many community safety partnerships in England and Wales. During this time, he was also appointed by the Home Office as an Advisor on crime reduction, working with three regional government offices in England.
Prior to establishing Evidence Led Solutions, Rick worked as a Research Manager for the Home Office Research Development and Statistics Directorate in London. During this time, he ran programs of research associated with vehicle crime and domestic burglary. This included managing a major evaluation of the Reducing Burglary Initiative, under the auspices of the UK government’s Crime Reduction Program.
His particular areas of interest are in the implementation of crime prevention and community safety initiatives and in policing. He has published on a variety of topics, from vehicle crime, arson and violence in the night time economy, to community justice and community clean up operations.
Jane Shelling – Library Manager
Jane is the manager of the JV Barry Library. She has more than 20 years experience as a librarian in the government and non-government sectors. Jane is involved in CrimNet, Substance Abuse Librarians and Information Specialists and is a Certified Practitioner and Associate Fellow of the Australian Library and Information Association.
