Introduction

K H (Hin) Oey is head of Crime Prevention within the Technology and Society Programme of Senter, an agency of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs in the Hague. Senter implements government policy in the areas of technology, energy, the environment and international cooperation, with the aim of sustainably strengthening the position of businesses and technology centres in the Netherlands. Within Senter's Crime Prevention programme, over 25 projects have already been completed or are still under way. Examples include electronic reporting, biometric identification, a "best practice" project database, smart cameras, daylight guiding in underground scenarios, camera monitoring in public spaces, vehicle tracking systems and Virtual Reality, Internet technology, and socially secure lighting.

This Seminar examined ways in which crime prevention can be facilitated through innovation in technology, such as have been used by Senter in the Netherlands.
